PROVIDENCE – Providence College announced Thursday the creation of a new global health fellowship funded by and named for alumni Dr. Robert C. Gallo and his wife Mary Jane.
The fellowship was established through a $250,000 gift to the school by the Gallos.

The Gallo Health Fellowship will offer summer internships at research centers and clinics across the United States and abroad to PC students pursuing multiple academic disciplines. Students will be matched with firms including Institute of Human Virology clinics in Baltimore, Haiti and several African nations.
The endowment will provide a stipend and cover students’ travel costs.
Gallo, a member of the medical research team which discovered HIV is the cause of AIDS, is the co-founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as well as the co-founder and scientific director of the Global Virus Network. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from PC before attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia for his medical degree.
Gallo would also go on to work for the National Cancer Institute for three decades where he directed the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology.
