R.I., Mass. gas prices down 3 cents ahead of Independence Day travel

PROVIDENCE – The price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline declined 3 cents this week in Rhode Island to average $2.92 per gallon, 7 cents above the national average of $2.85 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast Monday.

Prices in the Ocean State ranged 40 cents from a low of $2.69 to a high of $3.09 per gallon. Last year at this time, prices were 68 cents lower at $2.24 per gallon.

“Prices are at their highest point for Independence Day since 2014 but are still 7 cents lower in Rhode Island than this past Memorial Day,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, in a statement. “That trend is good news for the almost 40 million Americans traveling this week.”

Midgrade gas prices averaged $3.18 per gallon this week, ranging from $2.91 to $3.49 per gallon.
Premium gas averaged $3.33 per gallon this week, ranging from $3.07 to $3.59 per gallon.
Diesel fuel averaged $3.19 per gallon this week, ranging from $3.13 to $3.34 per gallon.

AAA Northeast expects more than 2 million New Englanders to travel by car for Independence Day this year. The organization expects Tuesday to feature the worst traffic travel times around the July 4 holiday. AAA predicted travel times could potentially double in the nation’s most congested cities.

Approximately 46.9 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home for the holiday, the highest level of traffic for the July 4 holiday since 2001.

In Massachusetts, the average price of regular gas declined 3 cents to $2.84 per gallon, 1 cent below the national average. Prices ranged 27 cents from a low of $2.69 to a high of $2.96 per gallon. Last year at this time, prices in Massachusetts were 66 cents lower at $2.18 per gallon.
