NEWPORT – More than 200 specialists and sponsors from the marine industry gathered to share ideas on technology, education and commerce at the Blue Innovation Symposium in November. The event – a first for Rhode Island, according to organizers – took place over two days at Salve Regina University in Newport.
The university hosted the event, which was sponsored by the Consulate General of Canada in Boston. This year’s theme was, “The Ocean, Data, and You” with a program focusing on data analytics and cybersecurity initiatives.

Expert speakers discussed blue tech issues such as the intersection of data analytics and cybersecurity with maritime industry sectors, according to a statement. Marine technology companies provided an overview of industry trends, and startups discussed their new technologies.
The two-day seminar ended with a tour of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology, or SMAST, showcasing the facility and the research that takes place there.
