PROVIDENCE – More southeastern New England schools’ online degree programs were highlighted in the 2019 U.S. News and World Report Best Online programs report than in the 2018 survey.
Five schools’ programs were listed in the 2019 findings – Bryant University, Johnson & Wales University, New England Institute of Technology, University of Rhode Island and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth – compared with four in 2018, with all of the 2019 honorees included in the 2018 rankings with the exception of Bryant.

Released Tuesday by U.S. News, the report reviewed a total 1,545 programs spanning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees – 55 more than the 2018 report.
Online programs in nursing, information technology, engineering, education, criminal justice, business administration as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees were ranked in the latest survey.
JWU
JWU programs appeared in five of the 2019 rankings an increase from the four 2018 lists on which the school appeared.
The Providence-based school tied for No. 49 in the 2019 online graduate criminal justice list, marking an increase from its No. 50 ranking the prior year.
JWU’s online MBA tied for No. 193 and the school’s online graduate business program, excluding its MBA program, tied for No. 104 according to the Tuesday announcement. The programs were ranked No. 184 and in the range of No. 120-158 (no exact rank was provided), respectively in 2018.
JWU’s online bachelor’s program was ranked No. 137 and also appeared at No.75 on the best online bachelor’s programs for veterans ranking in the 2019 findings. The program improved from its 2018 ranking, No. 143, by six places.
NEIT
Moving down from its No. 16 (tied) ranking in 2018, the NEIT online bachelor’s degree ranked No. 49 (tied) in the 2019 analysis.
URI
Ranking of the URI online bachelor’s degree program remained unchanged year over year ranking in the range between No. 264 and No. 348. An exact rank was not given.
UMass Dartmouth
In the Bay State, UMass Dartmouth similarly appeared on five rankings in the 2019 U.S. News findings.
Out of Dartmouth, Mass., the university’s online graduate business program excluding an MBA tied at No. 76. The program was unranked but mentioned in 2018. The schools online MBA program tied for No. 101 reflecting an eight-place decline from No. 93 (tied).
UMass Dartmouth’s online bachelor’s degree found itself tied at No. 123 in the Tuesday announcement after placing No. 143 in the 2018 survey.
While both were unranked in 2018, the school’s graduate information technology program ranked between No. 41 and No. 51 in the latest findings and its online nursing program ranked between No. 132 and No. 170 – an exact ranking was not provided for either.
Begun in 2013, the U.S. News ranking of top online programs has grown each year since its inception. However, in order to be considered, schools must opt in to the U.S. News annual data collection request.
For each of the categories in which programs were ranked, factors including engagement, services and technologies, faculty credential and training, student excellence and expert opinion were taken into account.
While unranked, Bryant’s online MBA program was also included in the 2019 Best Online Programs.
According to the award methodology, unranked programs are listed as such because they have fewer than 10 students enrolled in their programs.
Danial Ames, associate dean of the Bryant College of Business, told PBN Thursday it was “flattering” to receive a mention in the ranking, given that the program launched on Jan. 7 of this year.
Currently, he added there are more than 30 students enrolled and another 10 have submitted deposits prior to the March deadline.
“I anticipate we’ll see more than that before the enrollment deadline,” he added.
