PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island construction employment increased by 900 jobs year over year in December, or 4.8 percent, ranking No. 21 for fastest growth rate in the United States, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Friday.
The Ocean State’s construction employment growth rate ranked No. 3 in New England. Regionally, Rhode Island ranked behind Connecticut (No. 1 in the U.S. ), with a 16.9 percent increase year over year, and New Hampshire (No. 8 in the U.S.), with a 9.3 percent year-over-year growth rate.

Rhode Island’s 4.8 percent growth ranked ahead of Vermont (2 percent and No. 35 in the nation), Massachusetts (1.8 percent and No. 37 in the U.S.) and Maine, where construction employment declined 2.1 percent year over year, the fourth-largest construction decline rate in the nation.
South Carolina had the largest percent decline in construction employment in the nation, falling 5 percent year over year. Texas had the largest nominal increase in the U.S., with a 46,800-job increase year over year to a total of 778,600 construction jobs.
