It’s all part of a Rhode Island safe driver contest by Amica Mutual Insurance Co.

The Lincoln-based company announced Thursday it is partnering with Cambridge Mobile Telematics, which will provide the technology to track participating drivers.

Beginning Monday, the contest is open to all Rhode Island drivers. The overall safest and least distracted drivers will receive biweekly prizes of $500 and grand prizes of up to $10,000, Amica said.

“Safe driving contests like this present a unique opportunity to incentivize Rhode Islanders to really focus on their driving habits, recognize areas for improvement, and ultimately make the roads safer,” said Bob DiMuccio, Amica’s chairman, president and CEO. “It’s also a fun way to compete with family and friends.”

To sign up, users download at no charge the RI Safest Driver app from the App Store or Google Play from their computers or mobile devices. After registering, the app begins monitoring and scoring driving behaviors such as speeding, cornering, hard braking, harsh acceleration and phone distraction.

In the app, users can invite friends and check their trends, badges, driving tips, and leader board positions in the contest. The contest ends April 7.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics will track individual drivers’ results and determine the winners. Amica will only see the aggregate data from the contest, not individual results, Amica said.

“We believe safe drivers are made, not born,” said Hari Balakrishman, Cambridge Mobile Telematics co-founder and chief technology officer. “We see a great opportunity to improve road safety in Rhode Island.”
