PROVIDENCE – Nonseasonally adjusted total compensation costs in the Boston-Worcester, Mass.-Providence consolidated statistical area increased 2.3 percent year over year in December, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics this week.
Wages and salaries in the area increased 2 percent in that time.

In 2017, total compensation in the area increased 2.4 percent while wages and salaries increased 2.2 percent.
Nationally, total compensation increased 3 percent, while wages and salaries increased 3.1 percent in 2018. In the Northeast, which includes New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, total compensation increased 3.4 percent in 2018, while wages and salaries increased 3.3 percent.
The Northeast region had the highest total compensation percent increase in the nation, ahead of the West (3.2 percent), the Midwest (3 percent) and the South (2.6 percent).
