PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast region of the United States increased 2.3% year over year in January, slower than the U.S. city average of 2.5%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday.
Medical care prices increased more than any other primary category of prices tracked in the index in the region, increasing 5.8%, compared with a 4.5% national rise.

Apparel had the largest drop of any primary category metric tracked in the Northeast, falling 1.8% year over year, faster than the 1.3% national decline.
Other price changes in the Northeast year over year in January:

- Energy prices increased 3.4%, slower than a 6.2% rise nationally.
- Education and communication costs increased 3.3%, more than double the rate of the U.S. increase of 1.5%.
- Transportation costs increased 2.4% in the region, slower than a 2.8% rise in the U.S.
- Recreation costs increased 2.1%, faster than a U.S rise of 1.4%
- Food and beverage prices increased 1.9%, faster than the 1.7% increase nationally.
- Housing costs increased 1.9%, slower than the national increase of 2.7%. The regional housing cost increase was offset by a 6.1% year over year decline in prices for utility (piped) gas service.
- Other goods and services costs increased 3%, slightly faster than a 2.8% rise nationally.
