PROVIDENCE – A Care New England Health System psychiatrist is being honored for his work in supporting Colombian American culture.
Dr. Alvaro Olivares will receive a Legacy Award during a ceremony from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Statehouse.

Olivares is unit chief of Kent County Memorial Hospital’s cultural psychiatry program, and is chief of the outpatient electroconvulsive therapy unit at Butler Hospital. Both hospitals are owned by Care New England.
Olivares is also a clinical associate professor in the department of psychiatry in human behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
The annual award, given this year during the 211th celebration of Colombia’s Independence Day, will be presented by state Rep. Karen Alzate, D-Pawtucket.
Olivares, who was born in Cartagena, Colombia, joined Brown’s psychiatry residency training program in 1993. He began working at Butler the same year and became an attending physician in 1997.
