The Blackstone River Coalition recently presented Amica Mutual Insurance Co. with the “In Business for the Blackstone” award for the insurance company’s efforts to protect the water quality of the Blackstone River.
Amica’s efforts include the use of stormwater holding ponds and infiltration systems on its property. The company has also encouraged its employees to be conscious of water quality by highlighting car-care tips to reduce water pollutants in its monthly magazine.
“In one year, the total leakage coming from cars and trucks dripping onto roads and parking lots equals more contamination than a large tanker truck spilling into the Blackstone River,” said Eugenia Marks, senior director of policy at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. “We appreciate Amica setting an example and educating its employees on how to protect water quality.”
Amica has pledged to incorporate additional best-management practices recommended by the Blackstone River Coalition, such as environmentally friendly landscaping. •
