NEW BEDFORD – John B. Day plans to retire as president and CEO of Southcoast Health System Inc. in July 2011 after a 32-year career with the organization and its predecessors, the nonprofit health network announced Thursday.
Day, 59, told the organization’s board of trustees about his decision on Wednesday and informed employees about it on Thursday. The organization operates Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

The board voted unanimously to appoint as Day’s successor Keith A. Hovan, who has been president and CEO of its Southcoast Hospitals Group subsidiary since July 2008, when he succeeded Dr. Ronald B. Goodspeed. Before that, Hovan was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn.
After Day retires, Hovan will be in charge of both Southcoast Health System and Southcoast Hospitals Group. The organization, which was created in 1996 when the three hospitals merged, now has more than 850 affiliated physicians and almost 6,000 employees.
Day first joined the organization in 1978, when he was hired as a hospital administrator at St. Luke’s Hopsital. “Health care has changed in dizzying ways over the last three decades,” he said in a statement. “I am proud to say the Southcoast of today can stand with any hospital in the state in terms of our top-tier services, our dedicated and compassionate caregivers and our strength and stability for our region.”
Day’s compensation package totaled $935,540 in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2008, according to the organization’s most recent IRS filing. Hovan received $289,591 that year.
