Bogus DMV site targets R.I. drivers

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Motor Vehicles says a fraudulent Web site posing as an affiliate of the department has been attempting to obtain credit card information from unsuspecting Rhode Islanders trying to renew their registrations.

The R.I. Department of Revenue warns that the Web site, www.riregistration
renewals.com
, is in no way associated with the Rhode Island DMV. The department conducts all official business through its own Web site, www.dmv.ri.gov. (As of Tuesday, www.riregistrationrenewals.com had been “temporarily disabled,” according to a message found at the Web address.)

Rhode Island is one of several states, including Vermont and New York, that have been targeted with bogus registration Web sites, the department said. Although the site can be found on popular search engines like Google, the department said it does not appear that anyone has made a transaction through the site.

The Rhode Island DMV and the state Web portal’s manager, RI.gov, are working together to contact Google and other popular search engines to request that they eliminate the bogus site from search result listings.

Rhode Island motorists who may have used the fraudulent Web site are asked to contact the R.I. State Police’s detective bureau at (401) 444-1000.
