Verizon bringing Westerly top-speed DSL

WESTERLY – Verizon Communications Inc. plans to expand its high-speed DSL service to Westerly by the end of July as it rolls out the service to 9.7 million additional households in 21 states and Washington, D.C., over the next two months.

DSL – short for digital subscriber line – is a technology that transmits data over local telephone lines. The company’s high-speed DSL has a top downstream speed of 7.1 megabits per second.

Santoro said the service’s speeds are competitive with those offered by cable TV companies. Like other Verizon services, DSL has no usage limits at this time.

DSL’s visibility among Verizon’s service offerings has fallen in recent years as the company emphasized its new fiber-optic Internet and TV service, FiOS. Verzion lost 46,000 DSL subscribers in the first quarter, according to Multichannel News.

Since FiOS service is not yet available in all areas, Verizon is promoting DSL as a speedy – as well as cheaper – alternative for broadband subscribers. The company is offering a rate of $37.99 per month to new subscribers who sign a two-year contract for DSL.

High-speed DSL is already available in six Rhode Island municipalities – Cranston, Jamestown, Narragansett, Pawtucket, Providence and Tiverton, Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro told PBN.

Verizon Communications Inc.
