PROVIDENCE – The City of Providence, in an effort to fill quickly the potholes caused this winter, announced last week that it has eight full-time crews out around the city working on the problem.
The crews, working to cover all 370 miles of city roads, started on main arteries and are then expected to make their way to secondary roads, according to Mayor David N. Cicilline’s office.
“A combination of extremely cold weather followed by intermittent thawing has made combating potholes this winter especially challenging for our staff,” said Department of Public Works Director John Nickelson . “Patching is not a cure-all for repairing potholes, however, it’s the most immediate response to a pressing problem.”
The city also is using Parks Department vehicles for the work.
“Of course, the most effective, long-term solution to improve road conditions is through our citywide repaving program,” Cicilline said. “However, given the impact of severe weather on our roads, we will act quickly to improve safety and reduce the wear and tear on people’s cars.”
