PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital has named Drs. Fred Griffith and Peter Panagos as co-directors of its Stroke Center, the only such facility in the state to be certified as a primary stroke center by the Joint Commission.
Griffith, an attending neurologist at Miriam, was one of the original members of a hospital committee that began working on its certification as a stroke center in 2001. Panagos has been an attending emergency physician at The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals since 2003. Together, the doctors will lead a team of clinicians experienced in the acute diagnosis and treatment of stroke, including around-the-clock emergency stroke care.
“This new collaborative approach will provide The Miriam Hospital with the benefits of the knowledge and expertise that these two well-respected and talented clinicians have to offer,” said Dr. Kathleen C. Hittner, president of Miriam, in a news release.
The Stroke Center recently received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM – Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, which recognizes a commitment to providing quality stroke care by adhering to national standards of care.
Both co-directors are also on the faculty of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Griffith is a clinical instructor in neurology; Panagos is an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine.
Griffith and Panagos succeed Dr. Douglas DeOrchis, who has taken a job outside of Rhode Island.
