Ribbon cut on Brown Street Park

PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline on Monday joined the East Side community in cutting the ribbon of a renewed Brown Street Park, which was refurbished with recycled and donated materials.
“The Brown Street Park is now a showcase for excellent 21st-century neighborhood parks thanks to the vision, innovation and determination of many of the residents who use this park,” Cicilline said. “They took ownership of their neighborhood park and, with the help of many community partners, turned this park into an extraordinary, creative public space with something for everyone.”
To renovate the park, nearby residents created the nonprofit Friends of Brown Street Park, which initially set out to renovate the park “armed with lots of creative ideas, but no money to accomplish their goals,” according to Cicilline’s office.
The renovations include flower and tree plantings, a tractor-tire obstacle course, a sandbox constructed of former curbstones and a sun shade made of used sailboat sails.
