SurfRI opens 100+ databases to public for 7 weeks

PROVIDENCE – A seven-week trial of SurfRI, a Web site providing free access to more than 100 databases via the HELIN Library Consortium, began this afternoon with free demonstrations in the State Library for legislators and the public.
During the trial, which runs through May 31, Rhode Islanders can access the databases 24/7, from home, work, school or their local library. Offerings include encyclopedias, newspapers, business journals, health articles, biography, history and literature resources, and more.
The database trial was organized by the Library Division of the R.I. Secretary of State’s Office, on behalf of The Karla Harry Commission on Libraries in Rhode Island.
With more than 73 percent of Americans relying on online resources for information and research, the library commission said, “it is imperative that the data they obtain be accurate, dependable and authoritative. At this time, Rhode Island is one of only four states in the nation that does not offer its citizens access to statewide databases.”
The commission’s chairman, R.I. Rep. Peter L. Lewiss, D-Westerly, sees SurfRI as “the first step to improving library service throughout the state,” he said in a statement this week.
This “is an opportunity for the citizens of Rhode Island to access and use these databases and determine for themselves if they find it valuable,” Lewiss added. “The commission hopes the answer is ‘yes,’ and that individuals will contact their local legislators to support a budget allocation that will turn the trial into a permanent resource for all Rhode Islanders.”
