PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s very own “Little Italy” has made USA Today’s Top 10 list of great Italian neighborhoods in America.
The designation is based upon an interview with award-wining chef, restaurateur and TV personality Mario Batali that appeared in the travel section of the Oct. 5 USA Today. He cites Federal Hill’s culinary excellence and Old World charm as he recounts the highlights of his visit to Providence.
“Stop by Scialo Bros. Bakery and then head to Venda Ravioli for a beautiful lunch with fresh pasta made every day from scratch, all served in a delightful little piazza with opera music blaring from tiny speakers in a Fellini-style setting,” Batali told the newspaper. He also praised “WaterFire Providence,” encouraging readers to experience one of the season’s “spectacular bonfire displays on the river.”
The article, and the Top 10 designation, came as Federal Hill was preparing for the annual Columbus Day Parade and Festival this past holiday weekend. Also in the Top 10 for their Italian neighborhoods were Cleveland, Manhattan, San Francisco, the Bronx, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Diego and Boston.
“This prominent designation confirms why thousands of visitors are drawn to Federal Hill every year, eager to experience the neighborhood’s old-world charm, culinary excellence, historic architecture, and proud Italian heritage,” Mayor David N. Cicilline said in a statement.
