PROVIDENCE – The Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Miriam Hospital has received a three-year approval, with a commendation, from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, a recognition of the quality of the care it offers.
The CoC was established in 1922 to improve cancer survival; it is the only organization in the country that sets standards for cancer care and evaluates facilities.
To be approved, hospitals must meet 36 requirements involving patient care, education and a team approach. Hospitals must prove they have met the criteria for the past three years by submitting extensive paperwork and then hosting an on-site reviewer. To maintain approval, facilities must undergo the rigorous evaluation every three years.
