WOONSOCKET – The city’s financial assistance program for lead-related repairs in older housing has won the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s highest rating of “green.”
The lead program is part of Safety First!, in which homeowners and owners of pre-1978 affordable rental housing also can receive assistance with code-related repairs, such as new windows, doors and siding. Each project begins with a lead inspection, and on completion, the property owner receives a certificate of lead-safe status. Financial assistance is offered as no-interest, partially forgiven, partially deferred loans.

The lead-safety component, established in 2003 with a $585,000, three-year HUD grant, has made 58 housing units lead-safe – 10 more than projected.
Healthy Homes, as the program is now called, has been awarded a second grant of $2.8 million to provide lead education and to make 225 units lead safe by 2010. Sixteen nonprofit agencies have joined in the city effort.
