PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island have surged 17 cents in the past week and 32 cents in the past three weeks, according to AAA Southern New England.
Self-service, unleaded regular averaged $2.499 per gallon in AAA’s March 5 survey, an increase of 17 cents from last week’s survey and 8 cents from the beginning of the year. One year ago, the average price was $2.229.

The range in prices for self-serve regular in the latest survey was 21 cents, from a low of $2.399 to a high of $2.609, the nonprofit auto club reported.
AAA reported wider price ranges for other grades of fuel and advised motorists to shop around. Average self-serve prices this week were $2.609 per gallon for midgrade unleaded; $2.729 for premium unleaded; and $2.729 for diesel.
