WOONSOCKET – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, has determined that one levee in Rhode Island, the Blackstone River Flood Protection Project in Woonsocket, is only in “fair” condition and is of concern.
Completed in 1967 at a cost of $8.3 million, the levee is maintained by the city.

The Army Corps of Engineers noted various deficiencies in a recent report, and it said general and routine maintenance is required on the Woonsocket Falls Dam, with particular concern focused on replacing the gate cabling and painting the structure.
The Corps established a one-time “maintenance deficiency correction period” of one year. If the project fails to meet the deadline, it will be placed in “inactive status” and will no longer be eligible for federal funding should it be damaged by flood.
