PROVIDENCE – The State of Rhode Island has selected Santa Clara, Calif.-based APX Inc. to manage its renewable energy certificates and oversee compliance with the state’s renewable energy standards.
Starting this year, Rhode Island electricity providers must supply at least 3 percent of their retail electricity sales from renewable sources, reaching 16 percent by 2019. Allowable sources include direct solar radiation, wind, ocean/wave energy, the heat of the earth, small hydroelectric facilities, some biomass facilities, and fuel cells using any of those resources.

As of Jan. 1, Rhode Island is also connected to the New England Power Pool Generation Information System, which APX administers. The system verifies and manages the certificates that are the basis for environmental trading and investment incentives in the New England states, and it monitors emissions by all generators selling power in the region.
