PROVIDENCE – “Gasoline prices in Rhode Island have fallen 66 cents in just the last month, and a 25-cent plunge over the last week leaves motorists paying the lowest prices since one year ago,” AAA Southern New England wrote today in the nonprofit auto club’s weekly fuel-price report.
In AAA’s Oct. 20 survey, the average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline at Ocean State stations fell to $2.869 per gallon. This week’s 25-cent decline follows average price reductions of 21 cents in the week ended Oct. 14 (READ MORE) and 14 cents the week before. A year ago, the average Rhode Island price was $2.719.
“Prices haven’t been this low since last October, and are below $3 per gallon for just the second time in 2008,” the nonprofit auto club noted.
In neighboring Massachusetts, the average price of self-serve regular has fallen 72 cents over the past month and 31 cents over the past week – accelerating from declines of 18 cents in the week ended Oct. 14 and 15 cents the week before – to an Oct. 20 average of $2.839 per gallon, AAA found. A year ago, the average Bay State price was $2.679.
Nationwide over the past week, the average price of self-serve regular fell 24 cents to $2.929 per gallon, after falling 34 cents the week before and 14 cents the week ended Oct. 6, AAA found.
Meanwhile, at Rhode Island stations this week, the range in self-serve prices for unleaded regular widened to 87 cents: from a low of $2.629 to a high of $3.499, AAA said. Similar ranges were seen for other grades of fuel, which had average self-serve prices of $3.049 for midgrade unleaded (down 23 cents per gallon), $3.159 for premium unleaded gasoline (down 26 cents) and $3.809 for diesel (down 16 cents).
