The state’s previous record high of $3.239 was set in 2005, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A year ago at this time, the average cost of a gallon of gas at Rhode Island stations was $2.799.

Despite setting a Rhode Island record, however, the current average in the state is still 13 cents less than this week’s national average of $3.379 per gallon. The U.S. price also is 4 cents higher than a week ago.
