In spite of high prices in the region, and record prices in much of the nation, AAA still predicted heavy travel over the coming Memorial Day weekend.

An estimated 38.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend, 1.7 percent more than last year, the auto club said.
The number who’ll go by car will rise 1.8 percent to 32.1 million, or 84 percent of holiday travelers, AAA said. Another 4.4 million (11 percent), 1 percent more than last year, will travel by plane. And 1.9 million (5 percent), about the same number as last year, will travel by train, bus or other modes of transit.
