Artists’ sale for auditorium set

More than 50 artists are expected to take part in the 18th Annual Foundry Artists Holiday Sale and Silent Auction to benefit the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The gala opening will take place Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

Exhibitors will gather in the multi-purpose arts space “Downstairs at the Vets,” to show glass, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, metal, painting, home accessories, wearables and mixed media.

Bill Riker, a glass blower and spokesman for the Foundry Artists, a volunteer organization of artists — many of whom started out in the old Foundry Complex — said the group has grown since its inception. They work in various parts of the city now. The holiday sale, he said, is a great opportunity to introduce a wider audience to the talents of local artists.

This is the only such sale that the Foundry Artists hold each year.

“It’s a primary gift giving time and we are all in the gift wear business,” Riker said.

Riker said local artists are finding a happy home in the capital city. “The support of the arts in the city is just tremendous,” Riker said. “A number of galleries have opened in Providence in the past few years. We’re a very artist friendly area — that’s one of the things that makes Providence so much nicer than Boston and New York. It’s a livable city.”

The sale will run over the next two weekends, from noon to 8 p.m. on each Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call Riker at 331-2353.
