Despite those challenges, Providence-based Teatro ECAS is thriving, thanks to the community support it received. The local Latino theater group saw a 98% increase in revenue from $482,442 in 2021 to $955,447 in 2023.

Through investments from the state, the city of Providence and The Champlin Foundation, the company completed a $1.4 million renovation, converting an abandoned night club on Valley Street into a vibrant performance space.

That growth has had a snowball effect, Teatro ECAS General Manager Yvonnne Beauregard said. “The renovation spurred additional operational support from many different sources,” she said.

As New England’s only Latino repertory theater, Teatro ECAS plays a critical role in presenting diverse voices while also making a positive impact on the local economy.

“With our seating capacity doubled and several sold out shows behind us,” Beauregard said, “we are well placed to expand our offerings … to attract new audiences to the area.”
