PROVIDENCE – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza recently hosted a city hall event marking the return of Bird electric scooters to the city, where he was joined by company officials.
Santa Monica, Calif.-based Bird has a fleet of its scooters for rent and use again here, according to a news release, with Bird having been issued a city operating permit.

The scooters are put around the city in various locations. When needed, riders can unlock a scooter using an electronic pad at the site and a Bird app on their smartphone. At the end of the trip, riders lock up the scooter at a Bird location.
“I’m excited to officially welcome Bird to the Creative Capital,” said Elorza. “We’re proud of our growing selection of innovative and eco-friendly transportation options.”

Providence shares this vision and understands what is possible when we invest in environmentally friendly alternatives.”
Bird was founded last year by Travis VanderZanden, the former chief operating officer of Lyft, who then held an executive role at its rival ride-share company, Uber.
