BJs, Stop & Shop fined for missing prices

BOSTON – More than 100 Massachusetts food retailers were fined a total of $143,750 for missing prices on items.
More than 2,443 instances were found by the Mass. Division of Standards, according to a news release.
BJ’s Wholesale Club led the list with 738 items missing prices at 16 surveyed stores. The company was fined by $35,900 for the infraction. Wal-Mart was second, with 388 missing prices for a total of $32,300 worth of fines. Price Rite was fined $23,500 for 328 items missing prices. Stop & Shop was fined $10,000 for 310 items missing pricings.
Big Y, Costco, Market Basket, Price Chopper, Sam’s Club and Shaw’s were also fined.
The Division of Standards can fine a retailer $100 for each missing price label. For every 20 displays that are accurately labeled, a retailer earns forgiveness for one improper display. Also, retailers with guaranteed price-accuracy programs have their fines cut in half. •
