BLACKSTONE ACADEMY APPROVED FOR EXPANSION AMMENDMENT
Blackstone Academy Charter School, a thirteen year old independent charter high school is pleased to announce that it has been approved for an expansion. On October 14th, the Rhode Island Council on Elementary and Secondary Education approved the request which would grow the student population from 165 students to 350 students over a three year period and eventually include 20% Providence students to its current population of Pawtucket and Central Falls students.
“ This approval validates the many years of hard work put forth by our faculty and staff, not to mention our enthusiastic and dedicated student body. Our expansion will allow us to offer more classes and services to our students, reach more students on our waiting (which exceeds 300 in a typical year) and helps to give us the resources to share our successful high school model with others,” stated Head of School Kyleen Carpenter.
Over the last three years, Blackstone Academy has been classified as a Commended School and is only one of four high schools in Rhode Island to receive this designation. This designation was given because despite the fact that 83% of the student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch, positive outcomes of the student body include above state average test scores and high graduation rates. Additionally, about 85% per year are accepted to competitive colleges.
“We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to replicate our high school model. Students are successful at Blackstone because they are known well and feel cared about. High expectations and support for students in their academic, personal and civic pursuits helps them to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. We hope that other schools can learn from our model and the expansion will assist us to have the capacity to disseminate what we have learned ”, commented Executive Director Carolyn Sheehan.
