The index, which is a joint initiative by the American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability:IN, is a national benchmarking tool for Fortune 1000 companies to measure disability workplace inclusion. Each company receives a score between zero and 100, but only those that earn 80 or above are designated as Best Places to Work for Disability and Inclusion.
“We’re proud to receive a top score of 100 for the third year in a row and to be recognized on a national level as among the best employers for diversity, inclusion and equity,” said Carolyn Belisle, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Blue Cross. “We work closely with our internal disability advocates and use our scored report to build a roadmap of tangible actions we can take to grow our commitment to disability inclusion and equity.”
This year 542 businesses used the index and Blue Cross was among 344 U.S. companies, including a few from Rhode Island, to earn a score of 100.
The 2024 index was measured on the following categories: culture and leadership; enterprise-wide access; employment practices (benefits, recruitment, employment, education, retention and advancement, accommodations); community engagement; supplier diversity; and responsible procurement (non-weighted).
“On the 10th anniversary of the Disability Equality Index, we’re extremely proud of the 542 national and international companies that are taking a proactive role in leading progress towards disability inclusion, setting a benchmark for others to follow,” said Jill Houghton, CEO and president of Disability:IN. “Their dedication to fostering inclusive workplaces not only attracts top talent but also drives innovation and creates sustainable performance in today’s global market. Together, we are creating a future where everyone can contribute and thrive.”
