NEWPORT – A dining staple within the city is now under new ownership.
Ralph and Pat Plumb of Plumb Inc. announced April 20 that they have sold the Brick Alley Pub to Newport-based The Heritage Restaurant Group, formerly 1899 Ventures. Ralph and Pat Plumb founded the prominent restaurant in 1980 at 140 Thames St., occupying the former Newport Daily News office after the publication relocated to Malbone Road in the early 1970s.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Brick Alley Pub has received several awards over the years, including Ralph and Pat Plumb’s son, Matt, being named
Education Ambassador of the Year in 2013 by the Rhode Island Hospitality Association. Brick Alley Pub has also been
nationally recognized for its wine lists, as well.
Ralph and Pat Plumb said in a statement they sold the restaurant because they are retiring and noted that it is “never an easy or simple decision.” But, The Heritage Restaurant Group plans to retain the Brick Alley Pub’s entire staff, including Matt Plumb and General Manager Kim Dwyer, under the new ownership.
“We have had the pleasure of serving and getting to know so many incredible customers, many of whom have become lifelong friends,” the Plumbs said. “We are proud that Brick Alley now has the ability to serve the Newport community for another 40-plus years.”
Heritage Restaurant Group spokesperson Michael Anderson said in a statement that the new ownership’s strategy for Brick Alley Pub is “don’t fix what isn’t broken.” The new owners plan to provide resources to enable the restaurant to reach new levels of customer service and staff support.
“Our investment is aimed at adding value where it's needed without changing the core of what makes the Brick Alley a beloved landmark,” Anderson said. “This includes supporting the restaurant's successful operations and exploring expansion opportunities, such as adding a refreshed back patio and increasing marketing efforts.”
