Care New England graduates 23 from advanced nursing degree program

PROVIDENCE – Twenty-three nurses from across Care New England Health System graduated from the University of Rhode Island’s College of Nursing in the last week of April, earning bachelor of science degrees and pushing CNE closer to a goal of seeing 80% or more of its nursing staff with a BS or a more-advanced nursing degree.

CNE’s RN to BS Program was created in partnership with URI in 2014 to help meet that goal, which the health care network hopes to reach by 2020.

Deborah O’Brien, senior vice president of nursing for CNE and president and chief operating officer at The Providence Center, said many recent graduates learned more than they expected to, despite their years of nursing experience.

Issues such as evidence-based practice, research, social justice, diversity, patient engagement and leadership skills all presented new chances for learning.

“As the health care system transforms, it will breed new opportunities, and you will be able to shape the future with the skills you have learned in this program,” O’Brien told graduates. “Remember that during this era … you will be at the forefront of nurses and nurse leaders who will help to imagine new opportunities that revolutionize how we understand the health of our patients and how we can transform our communities.”
