SEEKONK – Central Transport Inc. faces $109,500 in proposed fines for alleged “repeat and serious violations of safety standards” at its terminal at 1761 Fall River Ave., according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
OSHA said an inspection by its Braintree office, begun Oct. 12, found a number of hazards, including several for which the Warren, Mich.-based company had previously been cited at other locations.

“These citations focus on hazardous conditions that could result in burns, fall, crushing and other serious injuries, or even death, if left uncorrected,” said Brenda Gordon, OSHA’s area director for southeastern Massachusetts. “The size of the fines reflects this company’s history of violations at other sites.”
Central Transport was issued six repeat citations, carrying $102,500 in fines, for fall hazards from unguarded loading docks; lack of eye and face protection for workers filling batteries; blocked access to the emergency eyewash station next to a battery-charging area; no training in using forklifts or fire extinguishers; failing to inspect forklifts for defects; and failing to remove defective forklifts from service.
In addition, the company was issued four serious citations, carrying $7,000 in fines, for lacking an emergency response plan; improper distribution of fire extinguishers; improperly installed electrical wiring; and allowing pigeon guano to accumulate. A serious citation is issued when death or serious injury are likely to result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known.
Central Transport has 15 business days to respond.
