JOHNSTON – The CharterCARE Foundation has awarded Operation Stand Down Rhode Island a $50,000 grant it will use to hire a full-time, licensed social worker for local veterans.
This award, part of the foundation’s focus on veterans’ mental and physical health needs, will enable OSDRI to address the mental health needs of Rhode Island veterans, including post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction issues.

“Many of the 2,000 Rhode Island veterans we annually serve suffer from some form of mental or behavioral health issue directly linked to their military service. Addressing these invisible scars of war is critical to stabilizing veterans’ housing, employment and overall quality of life,” said Erik B. Wallin, executive director of OSDRI.
“Partnering with OSDRI to provide this treatment is at the core of our mission to provide comprehensive mental and physical health options for the Rhode Island community,” said Paula Iacono, executive director of the CharterCARE Foundation. “We remember those who have fallen and are duty bound to care for those who have returned suffering from PTSD and other mental health disorders.”
“With the addition of a full-time, dedicated professional, clients will receive critical timely assessment and treatment protocols, minimizing risk of self-harm and maximizing successful outcomes. While it is tragic that these services are necessary, we are grateful to the CharterCARE Foundation for this funding, which will go a long way in moving us forward to address this critical need,” Wallin said.
