CMS.gov rates South County Hospital R.I.’s sole 5-star institution

WAKEFIELD — South County Hospital earned a five-star rating in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating this month, the only Rhode Island hospital to perform so well in the nation-wide assessment.

South County is among 337 hospitals in the nation to receive a 5-star overall rating from the CMS, which assessed 4,807 hospitals in its latest Dec. 21 report. The most common overall rating, according to the agency, is three stars. This is the second time the hospital earned the only five-star rating in the state during an update to the CMS’s hospital quality database. South County Hospital was also the only hospital with five stars in July 2016.

The overall rating summarizes up to 57 quality measures on CMS.gov’s Hospital Compare page reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia. The rating system assesses mortality, safety of care, re-admission rates, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and effective use of medical imaging.

Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and The Miriam Hospital in Providence, as well as Newport Hospital and Westerly Hospital, all earned four-star ratings.

Memorial Hospital, which Care New England is preparing to close, was rated at three stars. Also earning three-star ratings were Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket and Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick.

Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence each received two-star ratings. Roger Williams Medical Center received a one-star rating.

Information on Providence VA Medical Center was unavailable, as star ratings are not calculated for VHA hospitals, according to the report.

In Bristol County, Mass., St. Anne’s Hospital and Southcoast Hospital in in Fall River each received three-star ratings. Sturdy Memorial in Attleboro and Morton Hospital in Taunton received two-star ratings.
