PROVIDENCE — Care New England and Partners HealthCare have agreed to extend a letter of intent to merge, set to expire on Dec. 31, through the end of January 2018.
The ultimate intent of the merger is for CNE to become a part of Partners.

“Both CNE and Partners continue to work extremely hard on this complex process and remain optimistic that a definitive agreement will be reached,” according to a joint statement the companies released Wednesday.
Rich Copp, vice president of communications at Partners HealthCare, said the extra time was taken to accommodate the complexity of the two entities.
Care New England continues the process of shuttering the flagging Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, recently announcing its intent to keep primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, ancillary services such as x-ray, mammograms and phlebotomy, and a walk-in clinic at the 111 Brewster St. location.
CNE cancelled its plans to sell the hospital in October. The intended sale of the facility was originally announced in April, at the same time the company disclosed its intent to join Partners HealthCare of Massachusetts.
