WARREN – Warren art organization The Collaborative will host a writing workshop called “Emergences” on Saturday, Oct. 7, with a second meeting on Oct. 21.
“All of our founding members are educators in some capacity, so this workshop really follows our philosophy of using art to learn and educate,” Executive Director Uriah Donnelly said in a statement, in anticipation of the workshop.

Learn MoreJerry Blitefield, associate professor at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Warren native, will run the workshops. The event, he said, “is designed to get people to study a piece of art closely, to see what, upon close examination, emerges from the piece. … The ‘whatness’ of the emergences will fall into two categories: that which is explicit about the piece and that which is implicit within the piece.”
In the Oct. 7 event, participants will discuss the ideas outlined by Blitefield regarding a pre-selected work of art as well as one from The Collaborative’s gallery space. Over the following week they will then draft stories based on both pieces of art before emailing them to other workshop members for peer-edits.
The second half of the workshop, held on Oct. 21, will consist of sharing stories and reader responses.
Both the Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 events will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. at The Collaborative gallery space at 498 Main St. While the workshop is free, donations are encouraged.
