WEST WARWICK – Cox Communications today announced it has competed a multi-million dollar expansion of its fiber-optic-based broadband network in Rhode Island.
The Extendable Optical Network (EON) was completed in 13 months with “minimal customer disruption,” according to Paul Cronin, New England vice president and region manager for Cox.
Project EON began in April 2006, the company said. “Working during the night, from about 12 midnight to 6 a.m., Cox crews replaced equipment such as amplifiers and transmitters,” company spokeswoman Leigh Ann Woisard told Providence Business News in an e-mail interview.
“Our network is already fiber-based and fiber rich so there was no need to add fiber,” because “back in 1995, Cox recognized the power of a fiber-optic network and invested in this technology,” she said.
“This recent EON project focused on expanding the capacity of our current fiber-optic infrastructure,” Woisard added. “The beauty of our network is that we can make upgrades and continuously add to the capacity of the network without having to undergo a slow and total rebuild.”

The upgraded network makes it possible to offer “100-percent digital picture quality” to its Cox Digital Cable customers across Rhode Island; to continue to add high-definition TV channels – most recently, National Geographic HD and A&E HD; and to expand its movies-on-demand offerings, Cox said.
For Internet customers, the completion of Project EON means Cox can offers speeds of up to 20 Mbps with the “PowerBoost” feature the company introduced in April. (READ MORE)
