WEST WARWICK – Cox Communications Inc. says it has given its Rhode Island customers another boost in the speed of their Internet connections.
Cox said this is the seventh year in a row it has increased speeds for customers who subscribe to its Preferred, Premier, or Ultimate high-speed Internet services. The increases took effect on May 5.

“Our faster speeds will help ensure our customers continue to get the most out of their service,” Doreen Studley, vice president of marketing for Cox Communications New England, said in a news release.
In an e-mail follow-up, a Cox spokeswoman detailed the changes in speeds for different subscriber tiers.
Preferred subscribers’ download speeds increased from 12 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 16 Mbps, and their upload speeds increased from 2 Mbps to 4 Mbps. With an extra add-on, PowerBoost, their top download and upload speeds are 20 Mbps and 5 Mbps, respectively.
Premier subscribers’ download speeds increased from 20 Mbps to 24 Mbps, and their upload speeds increased from 3 Mbps to 4 Mbps. With PowerBoost, their top speeds are 30 Mbps and 5 Mbps.
Ultimate subscribers’ base speeds did not increase, staying at 50 Mbps for downloads and 5 Mbps for uploads. However, Cox is now offering PowerBoost as part of its Ultimate tier for the first time, which can increase Ultimate download speeds to 55 Mbps.
Verizon Communications Inc.’s FiOS Internet service offers download speeds between 15 Mbps and 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 5 Mbps to 35 Mbps, depending on which of four service tiers subscribers buy.
