PROVIDENCE – Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects has won Preservation Massachusetts inaugural Robert H. Kuehn Jr. Award for the redevelopment of Lowell’s Davis and Sargent Mill building.
The 22,000-square-foot project – including a 2,000-square-foot addition – was the creation of a new headquarters for Nobis Engineering Inc. The project is now in the process of being certified as a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-level building.
“The design of Nobis Engineering’s corporate headquarters is an excellent example of combining sustainable design with historic preservation. The integrity and inherent beauty of this historic building was accentuated through this project’s design,” DBVW Principal Michael Viveiros, who led the project, said in a statement.
Viveiros added that the building’s basic performance “has been dramatically improved, the embodied energy required by new building projects was minimized and a bold new interior space was created for our client. Plus, our client was able to qualify for Massachusetts state and federal historic tax credits, which greatly helped with the development and construction costs.”
Nobis and Overlook Associates LLC handled the project development. Along with using 43 percent less water than building codes require, the redesign includes a 10 kW solar panel array, recycled-content building materials and day-lighting controls, according to DBVW.
The Kuehn award recognizes “extraordinary projects that meld collaborative partnerships with creative and cutting edge ideas for the rehabilitation and active reuse of historic buildings.”
