PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM), working with Narragansett officials, has put out a request for proposal for the construction of onshore wind turbines in the coastal town.
The turbines, which would be on “one or a combination of state sites or town-owned properties,” would provide energy for DEM activities in the Port of Galilee and camping and beach facilities in the town, DEM announced. DEM did not pinpoint how many turbines the six sites – which include the DEM-owned Camp Cronin and Black Point – would support.
“This proposal is supportive of [Gov. Donald L.] Carcieri’s goal to provide Rhode Island with 15 percent of our energy with renewable energy sources by 2012,” DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan said in a statement on Monday. “The energy produced at the DEM sites will assist in reducing energy costs associated with the Narragansett beach and camping facilities, along with those at the Port of Galilee.”
The R.I. Division of Purchases Request for Proposal – RFP #7240880 – outlines at least three options for proposals and turbine ownership, ranging from the developer retaining full ownership to state ownership.
“The Town of Narragansett is excited about the possibility of using wind energy to provide or supplement power at two of our biggest energy-using facilities – the public works facility and Scarborough Wastewater Treatment Facilities,” Town Manager Jeffry Ceasrine said in a statement. “Both in recognition of declining revenue sources and in terms of reducing our dependence on nonrenewable energy, this project represents an important step in our long-term strategic vision for the town.”
