Elorza introduces Advanced Internship Program for Providence youth

PROVIDENCE – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza joined numerous leaders in the public and private sectors in announcing the city’s Advanced Internship Program Monday.

The program will recruit individuals between the ages of 14-24 to participate in a six-week paid internship over the summer. More than 25 businesses and nonprofits have partnered with the city so far to host youth for internships, including AAA Northeast, Rhode Island Foundation, Roger Williams Park Zoo and Ximedica, according to the release.

“Every Providence student should be prepared to succeed in the classroom and beyond,” said Elorza in a statement. “These real-life work experiences are incredibly valuable and will complement the learning that occurs in schools.”

The program’s goal is to prepare youth for work readiness by placing them in a structured work experience while overseen by a trained supervisor. Participants will also enhance their communication, critical-thinking and teamwork skills.

“Internships are an economical way for small businesses to build capacity for midterm and long-term growth, while providing opportunities for young people who might not otherwise have them,” Keno Mullings, managing director of The Mullings Group, an employer participating in the program, said in a statement.

Candidates should have some prior experience in a project-based or work program. Applications are due May 30. The six-week internship will begin July 5. Applications and more information about the program can be found at www.pvdsummerjobs.com.

The city is also encouraging businesses and organizations to partner with the program to provide work-based opportunities for youth. For more information, businesses and organizations can contact Brian Hull, the city’s director of economic opportunity, at bhull@providenceri.gov or (401) 680-8409.
