FALL RIVER – Embattled Mayor Jasiel Correia II wants to keep his job and is asking people not to support a recall effort.
Correia, facing federal wire and fraud charges, took to social media to ask people to not sign the petition, The Herald News reported on Oct. 30.
“I would appreciate your continued support. Please show your support by NOT signing the recall petition,” Correia wrote in a post.
The petitioners have 20 days from the Oct. 29 approval of their recall effort to obtain 2,510 signatures of registered voters to move the recall to the ballot. If that happens, the City Council would then ask for Correia’s resignation. If he declined, the matter would go to voters, who could also choose from a slate of candidates running for mayor.
Correia was arrested Oct. 11 on charges that he defrauded investors in a startup and used the money to pay for a lavish lifestyle and a political campaign.
Correia was first elected in 2015 at age 23 – the youngest mayor in the city’s history.
