WARWICK – FarSounder Inc. announced on April 24 the addition of a new 1,250-square-foot test facility in Warwick – the same town as its corporate headquarters.
Building its own test tank facility will enable the sonar technology firm to conduct transducer testing more efficiently, said Matthew Zimmerman, FarSounder’s vice president of engineering.

“We are extremely excited at what this will mean for our operation, not just in terms of streamlining our manufacturing process, but the opportunities it will offer for our various R&D projects,” he said.
The building of the facility is a result of FarSounder’s continued growth, and the company’s anticipation that it might move its assembly line to the same site in the future, Zimmerman said.
FarSounder would be willing to work with other companies who may need the use of a tank research environment for their own testing, he said.
Used on commercial and private ships for obstacle avoidance and shallow water navigation, FarSounder FS-3 sonars are capable of generating a complete 3-dimensional image of the sea floor and in-water objects at navigationally significant ranges with a single ping.
The company is currently working on a U.S. Department of Commerce grant to extend the capabilities of the federal agency’s navigation sonar. FarSounder is also currently working on a Phase II SBIR for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, as well as Project UPSIDE, a Port Security Pilot Program through Office of Naval Research and the R.I. Economic Development Corporation.
