Fehn office-chair designers plan upgrade, South by Southwest exhibit

BRISTOL – A design startup company that created a chair for stand-up desks, The Fehn, plans to improve its product, adding new technology.

The company also plans to exhibit The Fehn at the South by Southwest conferences and festivals, in Austin, Texas, next month, organizers told PBN.

The Fehn team is made up of Tom Derecktor, founder and CEO, along with co-founders Michael Miller and Rebecca Lorick, and Mike Fehn, the company’s master machinist and product namesake.

The Fehn chair, Derecktor said, is designed to allow for movement throughout the work day, with flexible positions such as sitting, leaning or standing, to improve blood flow and reduce back pain. He told PBN The Fehn is now getting another beneficial feature.

“We are adding a movement feedback loop to pre-emptively remind people to change positions frequently, which is optimal for heart and body health,” he said. “When people are working, concentrating on the task at hand, they simply forget how long they have been in one position.”

Derecktor, an engineer, grew up in the world of marine construction at Derecktor Shipyard in Newport. He is an entrepreneur with multiple patents, and he owns Derecktor Marine Technology of Portsmouth. He is also president and founder of BluSource Energy Inc., also in Portsmouth.

The Fehn launched last year.

Demonstrations of The Fehn will be offered at South by Southwest, held March 8-17.
