Former Neurology Foundation employee admits to extortion following termination

PROVIDENCE – Randy Lutz, a former employee of the Neurology Foundation, a nonprofit physicians group associated with Brown Medical School, has admitted to attempted extortion from the physicians group, U.S. Attorney Stephen G. Dambruch announced Friday.

Lutz, 37, of Providence, admitted to trying to extort $25,000 out of the group in exchange for digital-media devices that contained private patient data and employee data via emails, text messages and telephone calls to executives, board members and employees of the group following his employment termination in May 2017.

In July 2017, the FBI executed a court-authorized search and seizure of Lutz’s residence and seized several thumb drives, a laptop and a cell phone, some of which contained patient and employee data related to Lutz’s former employer.

Lutz is scheduled to be sentenced on March 7.
