The franchise:
Mosquito Joe | Cumberland
The pitch: Outside is fun again.
Years in business: Opened April 2017
Employees: 3
Cost to obtain franchise: $94,500 typical initial investment
Before opening franchise: Larence worked in financial services for 21 years in 401(k) administration, most recently for Mass Mutual. He was also one of four owners to purchase and “flip” the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket that sold in 2015.
Reason for opening: Larence enjoyed running a small business and decided he did not want to go back into the corporate world. While looking into other opportunities, a consultant showed him Mosquito Joe. After visiting the corporate headquarters in Virginia, Larence was sold on the franchise’s business model and decided to purchase territory in Rhode Island.
“We offer outdoor pest treatments, primarily for mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. Mosquito Joe helps people feel more at ease on their property so they can enjoy the outdoors. In addition to residential services, we spray for commercial businesses, cookouts, weddings and corporate events. My daughter Christa is our office manager and my son Brian and I are responsible for operations. We hope to add additional technicians as we grow.”
“We apply a barrier spray around the perimeter of the property and treat other areas where pests are likely to rest or breed, identifying hot spots with the property owner, and telling them things to minimize the number of pests, such as unclogging gutters and eliminating stagnant water. Mosquitoes can breed in a teaspoon of water!”
“We’re excited to help the community by getting involved with charitable events, youth sports and donation-driven programs.”
