WAKEFIELD – The R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) has officially offered to renew the contract of its long-time executive director, Grover Fugate.
At Wednesday’s council meeting, the council’s lawyer reported that the council has offered Fugate a three-year contract with a two-year option to renew. Salary information was not disclosed.

A spokeswoman for the CRMC said he was out of the office this week and unavailable for comment. It was unclear Thursday if Fugate had accepted the council’s offer. He has been working without a contract since June.
The council had discussed Fugate’s job performance during a closed-door meeting earlier this month, council Chairman Michael M. Tikoian told Providence Business News at the time, declining to elaborate.
Fugate has been the most visible player in the state’s effort to zone the waters off the coast of Rhode Island ahead of two planned offshore wind farms. The ocean Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) has been touted by Fugate and other state officials as a national model for studying ocean uses. It is a collaboration between the CRMC and the University of Rhode Island and is expected to be completed this summer.
